Mick Fattorini: Scarborough 1963-1970

You're warmly invited to the preview of Mick Fattorini's Scarborough 1963-1970.

Saturday 7 September 2019, 12-2pm

An exhibition of photographs at Woodend, The Crescent, Scarborough, North Yorkshire, YO11 2PW.

"Until the age of 8 years, I was brought up on council estates on the outskirts of Scarborough, a seaside town in North Yorkshire. On 19th March 1963 we moved into the town itself, which opened up a whole new range of possibilities for escape and adventure. I explored the town and particular places as if I owned them. This was a fantastic time for me: an intrepid explorer in my own town, hidden amongst the holiday-makers and day-trippers.

"I have decided to embark on a long-term project looking at those special places of my boyhood wanderings, and these images are where I have got to so far. They are not intended to be a record of what was and I have tried to avoid the merely nostalgic. Rather they are images made of what I see there today and what captures my eye now, through the filter of decades." - Mick Fattorini

Open Water

  • Stephen Joseph Theatre (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

An exhibition of paintings celebrating the joys of open water swimming comes to Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre next month.

Each painting by Andrea Hall – herself an open water swimmer – features a tiny rubber duck.

Andrea says: “If you’re wondering why every piece of my artwork features a rubber duck hiding somewhere in it, let me introduce you: Ducky is a thermometer and my long-time open water swim buddy. He tells me the temperature of the water, which is a bit of an obsession to open water swimmers – a bit like the weather to the British.

“I come from a swimming background, but hadn’t swam for decades, when I was inspired by watching the marathon 10k swim during London 2012. At that point I was very overweight and inactive and I famously said to my partner: ‘I could’ve done that when I was younger’.

“It was a lightbulb moment that kicked off my passion for the open water. Fast forward to 2018, and after 30 years working as a graphic designer I felt inspired by one of the places I swim at to start painting the view from the water and to try and portray the feeling of both freedom and vulnerability it gives me.

“The sport is really growing at the moment and there’s a huge emphasis on it being great for mental health too.”

Tadcaster-based Andrea is a professional artist and designer. Fascinated by drawing since childhood, she turned five years of art and design study into a successful career as a commercial designer for national and international business.

Inspired to return to swimming by London 2012, Andrea now combines her passion for painting with her relish for the open water, resulting in artwork that comes straight from the heart.

Open Water can be seen in the gallery at the SJT from Monday 2 September to Saturday 26 October. The gallery is open from 10am to 6pm, Mondays to Saturdays, except during show times (mostly evenings, but some afternoons: please check the website before travelling). Entry is free.

Church hopes exhibition will reveal ‘hidden talent’

  • Coldyhill Lane, Newby YO12 6HT (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

ARTISTS from across the Scarborough area are being invited to showcase their talent at a fundraising exhibition.

St Mark’s Church in Newby is celebrate community creativity by holding the exhibition as the centre piece of a free week-long arts festival, with events held daily from Sunday 19 May to Bank Holiday Monday, 27 May.

As well as the exhibition, the church is to host music, film and literary events each evening, beginning with a grand opening night, starting at 6pm.

‘We’re giving local artists the chance to reveal their hidden talents – and raise money for the church at the same time,’ said festival spokesman Trevor King.

‘Many people in this area may have not exhibited before and their work is maybe in the shed or the bedroom and kept secret.’

Mr King said they want to feature a diversity of art, including paintings, drawings, photography and 3-D work including ceramics, glassware and textiles.

He added: ‘We know this town has so many people who are really gifted. We want them to get involved and show us what they can do.’

All the exhibits will be up for sale with the artist receiving an agreed percentage of the sale price, said Mr King.

There promises to be something for everyone during the week with a busy programme of events.

·      Opening night with cheese and wine. Steve Brookes on piano

·      Open rehearsal of Staxton Singers

·      Film night showing Ewan McGregor in Christopher Robin

·      Scalby School music evening

·      Published artists and poets at literary evening

·      Scarborough Community Choir in concert

·      Singing vicar Revd. Mike Leigh and friends

·      Thanksgiving Praise Service

The festival is the latest of a series of fundraising events St Mark’s is staging as it aims to raise £250,000 to build an annex at the rear of the church by 2022.

The extension will include a kitchen and café area, toilets, an office, meeting rooms and storage space.

A new £95,000 roof has just been completed from grants, legacies and a series of fundraising events held over three years.

Services were held in the church hall on Coldyhill Lane until work to the roof as well as extensive rewiring inside the church was completed.

Looking ahead to the festival and daily exhibition, Mr King said: ‘Everybody is excited about what we have planned.

‘We hope people from across the town will come along and really enjoy all the festival has to offer with us.’

Artists who would like to display their work should contact Trevor on 07941 338 466 or trevorkimg3355@gmail.com as soon as possible.
