Scarborough to stage nation’s tribute to Britain’s armed forces
Armed Forces Day National Event, 27 June 2020
Scarborough’s no stranger to hosting major events, but it’s expecting to experience its proudest moment in decades on 27 June, as it hosts the country’s Armed Forces Day National Event, an action-packed, unforgettable tribute to Britain’s Armed Forces that includes the legendary Red Arrows, world famous Royal Marines Marching Band, and edge-of-your-seat displays by the Sea Cadets. It’ll be the first time the national event has been held in Yorkshire.
The ceremonial raising of the flag on 22 June will signal the start of the week-long celebrations, which culminate in Saturday’s main event – a spectacular, free family day-out featuring breath-taking military displays by air, land and sea, a grand parade involving over one thousand service personnel and veterans, vintage music and dance, and a chance for everyone to test their skills in thrilling, interactive challenges. The event is usually attended by a Senior Member of the Royal Family, the Prime Minister and the Secretary of State for Defence.
“Representing the whole of Yorkshire, Scarborough is incredibly honoured to have been chosen as the host town for this prestigious event, a reflection of its long and proud tradition with the armed services,” says Councillor Tony Randerson, the Armed Forces Day National Event Champion for Scarborough Borough Council. “We’re expecting thousands to gather to show their support for the men and women of the Armed Forces community - the serving troops, veterans, cadets, and also the service families, and have already had tremendous offers of support. This promises to be one of the region’s most memorable events, and we’re all rallying together so that Yorkshire can make the country proud and boost the nation’s spirits!”
Other events confirmed to take place during the week of the event include a children’s parade involving 20 local schools, a gala dinner, and live music concert at the Scarborough Open Air Theatre.
“Armed Forces Day is a wonderful moment in the year to celebrate our amazing military community,” says Alistair Halliday, Chief Executive Officer of RFEA, the Forces Employment Charity, one of the event’s key supporters. “RFEA has been helping ex-Forces find meaningful employment since 1885 and we couldn’t think of a better time to fully support Armed Forces Day than our 135th anniversary year! We’re very much looking forward to meeting with any ex-Servicemen and women, and their families, who are looking for support in their job search. Whether it be CV writing, job applications, interview technique or beyond, RFEA’s specialist advisors understand the unique challenges faced when finding work on civvy street and they are here to help.”

THE YORKSHIRE SHEPHERDESS TO REVEAL ALL AT SCARBOROUGH SPA
Amanda Owen, better known as The Yorkshire Shepherdess is to bring her new show to Scarborough Spa next year.
In Adventures of the Yorkshire Shepherdess on Sunday 29 March 2020, you will get to hear how she juggles life as a shepherdess, home renovator and mother to nine children, with life as a best-selling author and being taken to the nation’s hearts with the Channel 5 hit series ‘Our Yorkshire Farm’.
Growing up in Huddersfield, Amanda was inspired by James Herriot’s books to leave her town life behind and head to the countryside.
After working as a freelance dairy milker and alpaca shearer, she eventually settled down as a shepherdess at Ravenseat, one of the highest and most remote places in England, where she’s raised a flock of 1000 sheep and a family of 9 children with husband Clive.
Accompanied by some of Amanda’s wonderful photography, you will experience the highs and lows of the farming year, which in 2018 included the extremes of the Beast from the East and one of the hottest summers on record.
Funny, charming and filled with unforgettable characters, ‘Adventures of the Yorkshire Shepherdess’ will delight anyone who has dreamt of a new life in the country.

Matinee Show added due to Huge Demand!
We are delighted to announce Amanda Owen has added an extra matinee show (2pm) on Sunday 29 March 2020.
In this frank, funny and informative new show, Yorkshire Shepherdess Amanda Owen shares heart-warming tales and honest anecdotes from her remarkable farming, family life in North Yorkshire.
It's a life that has almost gone in today's modern world, one ruled by animals and the four seasons.
We’ll hear how Amanda grew up in Huddersfield, but was inspired by James Herriot’s books to leave her town life behind and head to the countryside.
After working as a freelance dairy milker and alpaca shearer, she eventually settled down as a shepherdess at Ravenseat, one of the highest and most remote places in England, where she’s raised a flock of 1000 sheep and a family of 9 children with husband Clive.
Accompanied by some of Amanda's wonderful photography, we’ll experience the highs and lows of the farming year, which in 2018 included the extremes of the Beast from the East and one of the hottest summers on record.
Ravenseat is a tenant farm and may not stay in the family, so when Amanda saw a nearby farmhouse up for sale, she knew it was her chance to create roots for the next generation. The old house needed a lot of renovation and money was tight, but with her usual resourcefulness Amanda set about the work herself, with some help from the family, a visiting plumber and a travelling monk. It's fair to say things did not go according to plan.
We’ll hear how Amanda juggles life as a shepherdess, home renovator and mother to nine children, with life as a best-selling author and being taken to the nation’s hearts with the Channel 5 hit series ‘Our Yorkshire Farm’.
Funny, charming and filled with unforgettable characters, ‘Adventures of the Yorkshire Shepherdess' will delight anyone who has dreamt of a new life in the country.

I'm Still Standing – The Music of Elton John is a musical celebration of the legendary 50 year career of Sir Elton John.
Featuring all of his greatest hits performed by the outstanding Joel Buckingham and backed by an amazing live band.
No show about Elton John would be complete without the outrageous outfits and glasses which have become a signature of his live shows from the early 1970's right up to the modern day.
Elton John has sold over 366 million records and is also credited with the biggest selling single of all time. His unique blend of pop and rock styles turned him into one of the biggest icons of the 20th century.
Alongside his stellar solo career he has also found time to compose scores and songs for several West End Musicals including the award winning Billy Elliot and movies such as the much acclaimed The Lion King. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame in 1994 and knighted in 1998.
Show producer Ash Sethi ensures that both the performance and staging are of the highest level in order to further the impression of watching the real Elton John live.
The challenge of writing a show that covers 5 decades and multiple costumes was blending it all together. This has been achieved with strong imagery throughout the show aided by the use of projections both on the screen and even the piano itself. Recreated audio snippets add to the atmosphere of each decade and combine with the visuals to set the perfect backdrop for each era of Elton John's long career.
The show takes you throughn incredible legacy of great songs and music and features all the hits including Crocodile Rock, Rocket Man, Candle in the Wind, Don't Go Breaking My Heart, Sacrifice, Daniel and The Circle of Life.

The Last Quiz Night on Earth at Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre
24 and 25 March
An immersive, innovative new play by Alison Carr, The Last Quiz Night on Earthcomes to Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre next month as part of a UK tour.
Presented by Box of Tricks Theatre Company, the show promises a very different experience of live performance, smashing the fourth wall as audiences are plunged into the drama of the show.
It’s the final countdown. Landlady Kathy invites audiences to the last quiz night on earth with Quizmaster Rav. He’s the host with the most. But with time ticking, some unexpected guests turn up out of the blue. Bobby wants to settle old scores, and Fran wants one last shot at love.
Expect the unexpected and plenty of drama as the show gets quizzical!
The Last Quiz Night on Earth is written by Alison Carr and directed by Hannah Tyrrell-Pinder, with design by Katie Scott. The cast is Meriel Scholfield, Shaban Dar, Chris Jack and Amy Drake.
Playwright Alison Carr received critical acclaim for her plays Caterpillar and Iris, and her play Tuesday has been commissioned for the National Theatre’s 2020 Connections programme.
Alison says: “I wanted to combine the known and the unknown, the safe and the downright terrifying. My vision was to create something that audiences don’t just sit and watch but are part of – but not in a scary way. Personally, the thought of audience participation makes me feel sick, but a quiz is something we can all do.
“The Last Quiz Night on Earth was so much fun to research and write. I have to admit, I know a lot about asteroids now, and the answers to a fair amount of quiz questions! I am so excited to have Box of Tricks bring it to life.”
Director Hannah Tyrrell-Pinder says: “I’m really excited to be working with Alison on her first play for Box of Tricks. She is a writer of real talent, crafting plays of depth, wit and real emotional warmth. The Last Quiz Night on Earth is a unique piece – a pre-apocalyptic comedy bringing people together through the power of trivia for a great night out.
“Following our success touring Chip Shop Chips to the heart of communities, I’m really looking forward to revisiting some wonderful places and spaces as well as discovering new locations with this play.”
Award-winning Box of Tricks is based in Manchester and champions playwrights, producing top quality new plays on local and national stages. The company has recently won critical acclaim with its productions SparkPlug, Narvik, Under Three Moons and Chip Shop Chips.
