“Energising and enthusing to watch ... punchy, toe-tapping and thrilling to hear!” is how local press described last year’s tour of Yorkshire by the renowned West Yorkshire Savoyards. Once again directed by ex-D’Oyly Carte professional, Alistair Donkin, we welcome the Savs back with a magical show, The Sorcerer, a delightful comic opera, containing some of the finest melodies Sullivan ever wrote and his first major success with WS Gilbert.
Starry-eyed young lovers Alexis and Aline wish everyone in their village could be as happily besotted as they are. In a moment of inspiration, they hire John Wellington Wells, from a highly respectable London firm of sorcerers, to brew a love-potion for their fellow citizens. It remains only to slip the potion into the tea at the wedding feast and hilarity, strange infatuations and social satire all ensue.
The talented and experienced Savoyards cast is drawn from the region’s best local companies including experienced Manchester soprano Helen Fieldsend as Aline and popular local actor and director, Graham Weston as the Sorcerer, John Wellington Wells. Accompanying this not-to-be-missed production is the orchestra under the baton of Oliver Longstaff.
