The house was built 1714-1720 by John Greame. Bow wings and a portico were added in 1808-1811. Later additions include an Orangery and dining room.
Various ground floor rooms are set out in Georgian, Regency or Victorian style and the exhibition area includes a permanent display on the history and landscape of the East Riding of Yorkshire. The Swinton Room, the Halifax Room and the Orangery were all restored and decorated between 1993 and 1995. These days, the magnificent ground floor Orangery and Swinton Rooms provide wonderful settings for civil marriage ceremonies, concerts & piano recitals, meetings, seminars, educational activities, art workshops and tea dances.
