Matt Anderson Quartet
The Grand Hall | Scarborough Spa
The 36th Annual Boyes Celebrity Concert with The Matt Anderson Quartet
London-based saxophonist and Dankworth Prize-winning composer Matt Anderson presents his quartet touring their new, critically-acclaimed release ‘Rambling’.
Since its launch in June 2018 at the hotbed of the creative London jazz scene, the Vortex Jazz Club, the album has won praise from the likes of Jazzwise, BBC Radio 3 and Jazz FM for its “outstanding,” melodic writing and “uniformly excellent playing”, all fronted by Anderson’s warm tenor sound.
The band brings together seemingly distinct musical influences, for example exploring the common ground between the folk music reminiscent of Matt’s rural upbringing in the North Yorkshire Moors, the bluesy, country strains of Bill Frisell and Scandinavian jazz, culminating in a lyrical and personal Afro-Celtic sound world.
The band has performed across the UK as well as appearing as finalists at the Keep an Eye International Jazz Competition at Amsterdam’s Bimhuis.
The new album follows Matt’s debut, Wild Flower, which was described by Selwyn Harris of Jazzwise as “their own unique stamp on Shorter’s very personal repertoire… of a quality that resonates with its inspirational source… Enjoyably un-pretentious.”
Matt's Quartet will be performing in the first half, then alongside the Scarborough Music Centre youth ensembles in the second half.
Tickets will be availble to purchase on the door.
Tickets: £10, £8 (Concessions)
